How To Choose a LED Tactical Flashlight

LED tactical flashlights are made for critical situations, with a focus on self-defense-oriented features and output modes. We’ve got dozens of different tactical lights in our store to choose from, so here are some key points to help you find the right torch.

Types Of LED Tactical Flashlights

LED tactical flashlights typically come in three distinct styles: EDC, weapon-mounted, and search and rescue.

EDC (or everyday carry) flashlights are compact LED tactical flashlights you carry on your person, typically clipped into a pocket. These lights often feature tail switches for use with an overhand grip, crenulated bezels for use as a striking tool, and self-defense-oriented output modes like strobe and turbo. EDC tactical flashlights are extremely high-output torches, often producing 1000 lumens or more at their most powerful modes.

Weapon-mounted lights are smaller LED lights that are designed to attach directly to a firearm. Most uses integrated rail mounts for PICATINNY or Glock-style rails, although some require a separate mounting kit. Other common features are remote switches for use with rifles and shotguns and integrated laser sights.

Search And Rescue LED tactical flashlights are larger models with an emphasis on high output and longer throw distances. These lights are too large to make good EDC candidates, but ship with belt loop holsters for carrying outside on your waist.

Why Do You Need An LED Tactical Flashlight?

Most customers shopping for an LED tactical flashlight are looking for a light specifically for critical situations.

Of course many will also double as fantastic utility lights thanks to their long list of features and versatile output modes, but most lights in this category are purpose-built for more specific applications.

LED tactical flashlights are ideal companions for self-defense, emergency signaling, and extended search and rescue applications, as well as use with a firearm in low light settings, whether attached to the weapon or held in the opposing hand.

How Bright Should A Tactical Flashlight Be?

We recommend at least 500 lumens for self-defense and emergency situations, although many EDC and search-and-rescue lights pack well over 1000 lumens, which seems to be the new standard in this category.

You’ll also want to keep in mind the maximum throw distance of your light, especially if you intend to use it for outdoor applications. Most hunting or search-and-rescue situations will benefit from a throw of at least 300 meters.

What Size Should My Tac Light Be?

The ideal size for an LED tactical flashlight will vary with how you intend to use it. You’ll want “pocket-friendly” dimensions if you’re leaning toward an EDC-style flashlight. That means no more than six inches in length and around one inch in diameter for easy access.

You’ll want to keep weapon-mounted lights as small and light as possible since they typically add weight toward the end of the barrel and have to be compensated for when firing.

Search and rescue applications will benefit from larger sizes, especially at the reflector as larger, high-quality reflectors are what allow a beam to achieve further distances.
